Yeah the character of Luke has really gone downhill. I think his big claim to fame is Laura, and with her off the canvas, he is just comic relief, and the town drunk. It's sad.

Really there has been no character development for Luke since the only 80s, which the exception of a short period of time in the 90s when Luke was a 'good' father.

I don't know. Luke was good in the 90s for awhile. it was later that he really declined. Even in 2001, he wasn't the joke he has devolved into now.

Well, to be fair, ALL the characters on the show are somewhat of a joke. Name one character that has developed in the last 5 years. I can't think of one.

actually, I think that we have seen some character development. I think that Laura Wright's Carly has had a lot of development. Whether that is credit to Laura or GH, i can't say. I would guess it is a combination of the writing reflexing a lot of what's happened to Carly- but that could be pushed by LW too. I also think Maxie has evolved into a *Lucy Coe* character. She has a good heart(no pun intended) but her low self esteem and issues causes her to act out in bad ways. I do find it ironic that the Robin PPD story is supposed to be character-driven and yet no one really likes it. Maybe it's because the character isn't really that likable.

I've been watching the PPD s/l lately, now that I'm watching Ethan, and I don't think that Kim has the acting chops to pull off the that s/l.

As far as the show I agree it's not the GH we grew up on. I think and this coming after talking with reps with the show and ABC, That GH is wrapped up in this age bracket thing , they feel the need to gear SL to the lower age. And in the past I would have said NO way but after going to a few Soap events , there are a ton on under 25 watching the show I would even go as far as they are the larger population when it comes to viewing the show. And this age group would rather see a shot them up tie them up break them up Sl that's short and sweet vs a 6-8 week story line played out (like in the 80's). Thats just my thinking.
I agree Maxie is like the new age Lucy Which for the record I loved her and now Maxie is one of my favorites on the show right now. As far as Luke. I think they have made him a total mess, Yes Luke has always been the kinda loose cannon but never would I have thought they would have made him out to be such a piss poor Dad and a drunken mess.

I really think that TPTB misjudge what that age bracket would be interested in. After all, that golden age bracket likes Greys Anatomy which has older characters, which more sophisticated s/ls.

I think that age bracket is pretty outspoken about what they want to see. Most of them are fans of the mob. THAT is the GH they grew up with- those are the good old days- for them.
However, it all comes back to balance. A little something for everyone. I wouldn't mind GH today, IF it paid respect to the past and the vets when they are on. IF, they could break up a couple without villifying one to justify the breakup. Sometimes, people just recognize that they prefer another person- it happens.
I don't care if the torch is passed to Jason. The torch has to be passed to someone. I care if characters i watched for years are made stupid to make him or anyone else better.
Helena will be back and i want to see her be her awesome evil self. I want Holly to be herself, when she returns.

I think if that age bracket truely loved the mob then they would be watching GH in record numbers. I contend that it's only those in that age bracket that like the mob that watches GH and it's a small group.

I have a confession to make..............I like the mob. LOL. I dont think it should be all consuming, but I like having Jason and Sonny around to kick some ass. Hell even way back in the day we had Frank Smith. The mob has always been in PC for me, since that's right when I started watching.
To paraphrase someone else
Hi. I'm the Commish, and I like the mob.............
Do they have a ten step method for that?

I guess I never minded the mob or even Sonny and Jason in the 90's but NOW every other storyline and character is thrown under the bus for the mob and Sonny and Jason. NOW, I resent the hel# out of the mob and Sonny and Jason. If the show was more balanced, if they didn't kill of all the Qs, if they brought back these legacy characters IN CHARACTER, I might actually watch the show. But as it is, I know this regime has zero respect for anything other than Sonny, Jason and the mob and therefore I HATE Sonny, Jason and the mob. (But I don't mind if others like them. That's just my opinion - and apparently many others. :

Okay, I admit the mob s/l was interesting when Jason lost his memory and experienced brain damage and choose a life in the mob over the privileged life as a Quartermaine heir. Although the violence was more graphic on the Sopranos, GH wins hands down in the amount of mob violence. Enough is enough, GH is a soap not a cable tv serial. They need to get back to their roots.

i have to agree with Lakesgirl.
I didn't mind the mob when they were PART of the canvas. We were still able to have good guys and storylines that were given to a broader cast and weren't all mob-related.
I understand the budgetary restrictions and the need for a smaller cast. I also think that people need to be more receptive to new characters and storylines outside the mob.
